As far as how well this would work in reality... it wouldn't. The navigational deflector is behind the saucer section, which would limit its effectiveness, and having the nacelles placed almost directly on top of the saucer section is just asking for trouble. It's a nice design, but in terms of practicality... it would never reach production.

The deflector dish is also obviously BELOW the saucer section, and many Trek ships - both Starfleet and otherwise - have nacelles directly attached to the saucer section.

This looks a lot like a TOS-version of the Steamrunner-class that was seen in First Contact

Very nice work. I like the kind of blend you created using TOS and ENT era technology. The aztec pattern is spot on and I really like the overall lighting! Good job!

So, an engineering crewman has to travel through the nacells to get to the engineering compartment?

Well there are two options - either the pod has no maintenance or the crew travels by nacelle structures - that one is possible as even the NX01 had enough space in its nacelle to fit the whole crew :)

No Federation ship has ever been without need of occasional maintenance.

You might want to reconsider the location of the port and starboard phasers. They appear to have a large portion of their firing arcs blocked by the engines.

I feel like this kind of design works better in TOS than it did with the Steamrunner

Yeah it looks quite fitting for that era. However, if we take the tech into account, TNG era Steamrunner would actually be the one possible to work in that universe.

In TOS era the nacelles were placed away from the hull and in the clear visibility of front view due to the radiation. Roddenberry designed all his ships that way.

interesting design :) is the aft section attached by the nacelles?

Yep, it's held by the pylons only (just as in Steamrunner)

this is excellent work. I really like the way did TOS here and the perspective. Where does this project fall on your commission fee scale?

Thanks a lot :) It falls under the "big 3D render", which is 60$.

Well it would be quite awkward, but with a slight design changes, it could fit that role.

Possibly because I haven't seen any other views of it but how have you mounted the engines to the hull? They kinda look like they're just sitting on top from this angle.

Yeah they're connected with a part that's as wide as the dark ring parts behind the bussards - if you look closely you will see that there's something lighter between the nacelle and hull.

My thoughts as well. I seem to recall there was a reason they were distanced from the rest of the fuselage.

Well done, though! Nice render!

I thought so as well with the warp nacelles, that the theory was they gave off a crazy amount of radiation. However the Defiant class and Steamrunner class were great departure from that theory, and if it's good enough for the Defiant then it's good enough for everybody.

:iconadamkop:

Thanks :) The design is based directly off the Steamrunner class so that's the reason it looks that way.

That's interesting, but from a Star Trek geek POV, the warp nacells are right on top of the saucer section, which negates the entire reason they're on pylons. If you look at every Federation design the nacells are separated from the body - as a safety mechanism (radiation, explosion, etc...).

:iconadamkop:
AdamKop Featured By Owner Jan 4, 2013  Student Digital Artist
Yeah even the radiation would be quite bad, but that's what the commissioner wanted - a TOS version of Steamrunner.

The Defiant class as well, but they were built to take a licking as one massive block of ship.
