Just a weird experiment :) Not really proud of it though, as it was one of the first concepts for big ships that I made.

Hmm I think that's not official either. There are a lot of designs that try to be Nebulon-A :)

The Nebulon-A reminds me of a UNSC Destroyer

Oh never thought about it that way. I wanted to make it look like something similar to the Nebulon B but with excessive armor plating around sensitive ship parts.

But still it does have a resembling shape, though it is obviously smaller and much more advanced

How many meters is a Nebulon A Frigate?

Hey, well done... shares some angular contours with the Kuat Drive Yards star destroyer line, especially the Clone Wars Acclamator, and the Nebulon-B is a KDY product. Call this a clone wars design, only sold in small numbers, but became the basis for KDY's winning entry in one of the Empire's early design contests. The Nebulon-B goes on to become one of the most common warships in the galaxy.

What would you compare this to size wise???

Probably the blockade runner - it would be slightly bigger than one of them .

This is a very nice ship design. It looks like it could comfortably fill the gap between a Nebulon-B frigate and a blockade runner as mid-sized capital ships go. Do you have any specifications for this vessel? Like, length, crew, displacement, weapons, fighters, etc?

Thanks :) I didn't do detailed descriptions and dimensions on my ships, but it should be a bit smaller than the Nebulon B, about 60% of its length.

This looks a little like the Split M4 class fighter from the X3 games, especially the long slim fuselage and the upper rear fin. But with the Alliance Phoenix on the side the Star Wars is clear.

Wow I'm even not aware of that ship's existence and yet it looks really similar. It's really weird, but this one is a result of mixing the existing Nebulon B frigate, rearranging its parts and adding more angular shapes. I guess the creator of the M4 was also inspired by concept vehicles for original Star Wars trilogy :)

Today, with so much SciFi out, its almost impossible to design something completely unseen. You will have 1 or 2 elements that someone knows from a design somewhere you where never aware off. I often had an idea only to find a very similar thing or plot development in a movie or game, and im not even an artist! XD

Yeah I think that most of the basic shapes have been used up by now :D I just decided to make rather simple vessels with distinctive colors and details.

That's a natural process of skill development. Believe me, I'm often looking at some older work thinking what on Earth I was doing back then... ;)

I really like your ship design. Do you ever make any like the Falcon scale wise? Like a stock light freighter?

Yeah I did a Mandalorian cargo ship although it's a bit smaller : [link]
I also made a Corellian ship based on the Falcon itself : [link]

Thanks ! It was supposed to be even more rough in shape but people wanted to see something sleeker so I decided to make half of it sharp and keep the rest industrial. Luckily it's SW so it wasn't difficult merging the styles.

Neat design, reminds me of older Star Wars games like X-Wing. Just a quck clarification though, the Nebulon-B(specifically the Redemption) was first seen on screen in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

Meh it happens. I personally have been really into EVE Online lately. Some neat ships there too. Though I'm not a huge fan of asymetrical starship designs there are some good looking ships there.

Hmm what a coincidence - I was just looking at EVE contest ships a few hours ago :D I gotta say that some of them are really amazing but I'm not into such big ships. Asymmetrical designs are pretty cool but in Star Wars most of them don't work because only a handful were made like that in the original movies.

Yeah I've seen the DA contest winner in game. The "Tornado" Tier 3 battlecruiser. Pretty sweet, fast and a good sniper(or so I've been told). Most of the asymetrical designs in Star Wars are Corellian in origin like the Millenium Falcon or the Outrider.

I'm trying t learn how to add more detail to my models and ways to apply textures. It's not easy for me. Normal maps in particualr are trublesome.

:iconadamkop:
AdamKop Featured By Owner Mar 28, 2012  Student Digital Artist
Yeah now that I think about it, Falcon and TIE Bomber were probably the only canon asymmetrical ships in the old trilogy.
If you're trying to learn textures for hi-res models, don't look into normal maps :) Except for some really fine details and video game models, they're basically useless. I did only one model in my life with normal maps and it was for a contest :D

Rogue284 Featured By Owner Mar 29, 2012
Yeah I can't think of any others in the movies that were asymetrical.

Thanks for the tip. The normal maps were just supposed to add details like the smaller finer grooves between metal plates on the ships hull. The larger ones would be modeled but the smaller ones it would be better to NM. At least that's what I've been lead to believe.

I feel I'm trying to start too big though so I'm going to scale back my modeling a bit(at least in terms of scale) and start smaller so I can learn better how to add small details that make everyone's models look so good. Best I've been able to do is my Thor model. Still it's a step in the right direction.
